State of the Canada/US Relationship

Earlier this year, US President Barack Obama welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his delegation, the first official visit by a Canadian PM to the US in nearly two decades. By mid-summer of this year, the two leaders will meet in person at least twice more, building on the policy agenda they set forth in their joint meeting and maximizing the opportunity to collaborate before President Obama leaves office in January 2017.

Sharing one of the world's longest borders, the US and Canada are intrinsically linked to one another's economies, cultures and societies. As trading partners, the two nations benefit from a US$1.4 trillion bilateral trade and investment relationship. As security partners, they cooperate through the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). And as energy partners, they are increasingly working together to address climate change and promote renewable energy.
