Even before September 11th, globalization was on everyone's minds and lips. While reasonable people can differ about the merits of globalization, nobody disputes that in the modern global marketplace, borders — both physical and conceptual — disappear every day. Globalization has prompted many countries to attempt to create favorable conditions for foreign investment by United States companies. Similarly, many international firms have increased their commercial presence in the U.S. It is not unusual for a company owned or controlled by a U.S. entity to employ American citizens at the company's overseas operations, or for foreign-owned firms to employ U.S. nationals in their American-based facilities.
